Feature on Mike Muratore by Joshua Sandoval,
AP Reporter
Mike Muratore is a comedian you probably shouldn’t heckle.
At first glance, the 5-foot-5 Italian, African-American, and Puerto Rican
10-year veteran of comedy looks like he could be intimidated by simply
standing over him, but then you come to find out that he teaches Jeet
Kune Do.
Practicing an offensive and adaptive style of martial arts has served him
well in an industry that requires comics to be aggressive and on their
toes at all times. This form of martial arts was created by Bruce
Lee, and is based on the premise of fitting in. It’s about becoming the
formless form, which means taking your opponents form and becoming their
shadow.
Muratore clearly takes the Jeet Kune Do philosophy on stage with him.
“The audience is like a glass and I am like water,” says Muratore, who is
often compared to as a cross between Sam Kinison and Don Rickles. “I am
just trying to fit into the glass.”
Since 2002 he has studied under Jerry Poteet, who learned one-on-one with
Lee.
“I practiced martial arts when I was 14-years old and stopped when I was
20 and then got back into it when I was 35,” Muratore explains,
“Basically because I was fat and broke up with my girlfriend.”
A jump from martial arts to stand-up isn’t that big of a leap once you
get to know the Los Angeles based comic.
The jobs he held before martial arts and comedy include working as a
telemarketer, psychic, furniture mover, waiter, chauffeur for strippers
and as an employee in a morgue. He also worked for a modeling agency and
spent some time in casting.
His foray into stand-up began as a theatre actor. He had trouble booking
movies because he would go up for parts against Ralph Macchio and Kevin
Dillon. One day a casting director told him that if he couldn’t beat out
those guys for parts then he should probably think about a career
change. The casting director suggested he was more fit for stand-up.
Recently he became a regular at “The Laugh Factory” and “Ice House”,
toured with Gabriel Iglesias and appeared on “TBS Weekend Extra.”
A sampling of jokes from his book, “Killosophy” makes anyone realize why
his nickname is “The Serial Killer of Comedy”.
“I had sex with this fat woman. She wanted foreplay, so I dressed up like
a cookie to put her in the mood.”
“The pen is mightier than the sword, especially if you stab someone in
the eye.”
“I don’t believe in cheating. I might be a sociopath, but I am not a
cheater. I am a killer with morals.”
People either really love him or hate him, but for your sake you may want
to like him.
